Updated: Jun 24, 2024
Super Typhoon Khanun is the sixth named typhoon of the 2023 Pacific typhoon season. "Khanun" is provided by Thailand, which means jackfruit. Typhoon Khanun has a lifespan of 18 days, and it has a strange and complex path that has undergone three turns.
To make it more clear, we will divide Khanun's path into three parts.(The yellow arrow direction represents the normal route)
(1) Moving westward;

Typhoon Khanun was formed on July 28th and subsequently moved westward under the guidance of strong subtropical high-pressure airflow. On July 31st, the subtropical high pressure continued to strengthen, causing Khanun to shift towards a northwesterly direction.
(2)“Turn around”

On August 2nd, the subtropical high pressure system suddenly "fractured" into two high pressure centre. One located near the Shandong Peninsula in China and the other located approximately 20 latitudes east of Japan. In addition, there is a third subtropical high center in the ocean east of the Philippines. This environmental field configuration causes Typhoon Khanun to be guided by a northeastward flow, and it is predicted to shift northeast and approach the southern coast of Japan.
(3) Turning again

On the afternoon of August 7th, the subtropical high pressure strengthened and moved westward again, which covering more than half of Japan. At this time, Khanun was located on the west side of the subtropical high theme and guided by it, which causing the typhoon to turn northward again, passing near the coast of Japan and making landfall along the coast of Gyeongsangnam do, North Korea.
